trKey
The keyboard that translates as you chat.
trKey is an Android keyboard for people who chat to each other in different languages. Type in your own language, tap Translate, and the text in the message box is replaced by its translation. Then send it as usual, in your favourite chat app.
How it works
- Set it up. Switch trKey on in Android's keyboard settings.
- Type and translate. Write your message, then tap Translate. Use the flag button to select the language to translate into.
- Send. Not what you meant? Undo translation puts your own words back.
What you get
- Translation on your phone. The language file is downloaded once (between 30 and 75 MB). The act of translation happens entirely offline.
- 29 languages and English. From Arabic, Persian and Urdu to Bengali, Hindi and Tamil, with most European languages, Russian, Turkish, Indonesian and Chinese. See the Languages page.
- Made for chatting. The translation replaces your text in place. You can keep the original above or below it, or have trKey send the message for you.
- A real keyboard. Layouts for most of the languages, and right-to-left languages work as well as left-to-right ones.
- Private by design. No accounts, no adverts, no tracking. Translation is turned off for password fields. See the privacy policy.
- Your choice of engine. trKey uses Firefox's open-source translation models by default. Google's translator is an optional extra, for a few additional languages.
An early version. trKey is a proof of concept that we are testing with a small group of people. Translations are made automatically and can be wrong, so check anything that matters before you send it. It is for Android 8 and later, and it is not on Google Play yet.
